Tony winner Jefferson Mays, Dakin Matthews and Donna Hanover are the newest additions to the cast of the upcoming Broadway revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man. The production begins previews on March 6 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, with opening night set for April 1. The trio joins previously announced cast members James Earl Jones, Candice Bergen, Angela Lansbury, John Larroquette, Michael McKean and Eric McCormack.
The Best Man, Vidal’s classic political drama, tells the story of Arthur Hockstader (Jones), a former U.S. president who can’t decide which of two presidential candidates to endorse. Hanover plays a journalist covering the election, Mays portrays a businessman and Matthews plays a senator.
Mays won a 2004 Tony Award for his performance in I Am My Own Wife. Most recently, he has been seen on Broadway in Journey’s End. Journalist and television personality Donna Hanover will make her Broadway debut in The Best Man. She has appeared off-Broadway in Picked, The Vagina Monologues and Hillbilly Women. Matthews’ Broadway credits include A Man for All Seasons, Julius Caesar, Henry IV and QED.
The creative team of The Best Man includes scenic designer Derek McLane, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, music and sound designer John Gromada and costume designer Ann Roth.
